Ruined has won a number of awards, including two Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Music in a Play, one Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New off-Broadway Play, two Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Lead Actress and four Obie Awards, one for Best New American Play and three for Best Performance. Ruined is a story set in the civil war ravaged land in the Congo. The play is set in today's world and focuses on the countless number of women who were directly affected by the disastrous chain of events that lead to the civil war. You will first be introduced to the lead character, Mama Nadi, who is owner of a pub and house of ill repute. However, the pub also doubles for a place that the weakened, or"Ruined", women of Democratic Republic of Congo. As the war rages on, Mama Nadi offers her services to the rebel soldiers who are fighting this war and does not position herself between the women that work for here or the soldiers. This makes it seem like Mama Nadi is in it for the business aspect of helping these poor women. However, you really do not know where Mama Nadi stands, but if you want to know, you need to go check out the show for that privileged information.
