NASCAR - IRL - MOTOCROSS - OTHER RACING EVENTS

Mark Martin was born on January 9, 1959 in Batesville, Arkansas and began his racing days on dirt tracks when he was 15. From there, he moved to paved courses in the ASA. Mark was very successful in the ASA winning 22 races. He also won 4 championships in the ASA and was voted Rookie of the Year in 1977. Mark ran his own racing team in 1981 placing in the top 10 at twice with two pole positions that season. The 1982 season was a bit better in top ten placements for Mark; however, he came into a dilemma with his team. He was unable to fund his team anymore and was forced to auction off all of his racing equipment to work for other team owners and sponsors. Mark Martin has been known as the “best driver to never win a championship” by ESPN on his lack of Sprint Cup Series wins but has also been credited as one of the most professional and morally sound drivers in NASCAR. Mark has 48 wins and 30 poles in the Nationwide Series, and has 40 Sprint Cup Series wins over his whole career but has never won the trophy. The closest he has come to winning the series was in 1990 for Roush Racing. Aside from his 4 ASA championships and his ASA Rookie of the Year award, Mark has been the IROC Champion five times and has been named one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers.
