In 1974, the Washington Capitals were formed along with the Scouts. The Capitals hold the longest losing streak of any team in the NHL with an astonishing thirty-seven consecutive losses in their first season. Even among the expansion teams, an opening record of eight, sixty-seven, and five was unthinkable. The only team to come close to this failure was the Winnipeg Jets with nine wins and fifty-seven losses. The consistently abysmal showings gave rumor that the Washington Capitals would be dropping the Washington and moving out of Washington D.C. This belief was quashed however in 1982 when new general manager, David Poile, orchestrated a large trade with the Montreal Canadiens that would quickly pay off for the franchise. With the sudden surge of skill and a twenty-nine point hike from the previous season, the team went to the playoffs. While they ultimately lost the playoffs, the point was made that the Capitals would soon be a major competitor in the league and that there was no way they would be moving from the nation's capital. They have not won a Stanley Cup yet, but have repeatedly shown they are capable with numerous division championship appearances. Their 2009-10 season stats list fifty-four wins, fifteen losses, and thirteen overtime losses for a superb season point total of one hundred and twenty-one points. They were defeated in the Conference Quarterfinals by the Canadiens, but it should be noted they earned a complete one hundred point difference from their initial season of twenty-one points!
