The Phoenix Coyotes, formerly the Winnipeg jets until 1996, were founded in 1979 and hold the record in the NHL for the longest winless streak at thirty straight games in 1980-81. They are also the only team in the NHL to honor retired numbers from previous incarnations of the team in the WHA. Notably, Teppo Numminen, number 27, is the only retired player to have played for both the Jets and the Coyotes, and is the only one to have played for the Coyotes at all. They have two former players honored in the hall of fame, namely Mike Gartner in 2001 and Brett Hull in 2009. They recently filed for bankruptcy and the team is owned and operated by the NHL directly, specifically to maintain the team until a buyer can be found to finance them. Following the bankruptcy, the team saw its first playoff invitation in recent history by scoring an uncharacteristic one hundred and seven points up from their seventy-nine points in the previous season. The 2009-10 season was a very good year for the Coyotes on the ice with fifty wins, twenty-five losses, and seven overtime losses. They eventually lost in the Conference Quaterfinals to the Detroit Red Wings in a close final match of three to four.
