Founded 1926 as an Original Six team, the New York Rangers were the first United States team to win the Stanley Cup in 1928-a feat they have repeated three more times in 1933, 1940, and 1994. In 1929, they were the first NHL team to travel by plane leading them to their 7-6 loss to Toronto. The team is currently owned by James Dolan, managed by Glen Sather, coached by John Tortorella, and Chris Drury is the captain. They had control of Wayne Gretsky's contract in 1996, but he was in decline just as the team was, and thus, could not pull out another Stanley cup before his retirement from the sport. Gretsky's biggest contribution to the team ended up being their push to the Eastern Conference Finals. He was briefly reunited with an old Oiler teammate for one season, but he was traded away one season after Wayne's arrival. After Gretsky's retirement, his number, 99, was officially retired by the NHL making it only the second number to be retired from a league since Jackie Robinson in baseball. The other retired numbers specific to the team are one, two, three, seven, nine, eleven, and thirty-five. The team's 2009-10 stats say they won 38 games, lost 33, overtime lost 11, and earned 87 points for the season!
