Founded in 1997, the Atlanta Thrashers would not see ice until the 1999-00 season. The teamís name was announced a year following the sanction for a new team by the NHL. The brown thrasher is the state bird and subsequently where the team derived its name. The same year as their first game, Defenseman Petr Buzek was placed on the World Team for the NHL All-Star Game and was officially their first player to do so. Following the death of Dan Snyder in a tragic car accident, his number was removed from circulation by the team, and for the next couple seasons, the team was plagued by injuries mostly on the goaltenders. During all this, their first round draft pick from their first season, Ilya Kovalchuck also the first Russian draft pick, tied for league leading goals with two other players, Rick Nash and Jarome Iginla. Their goaltender, Kari Lehtonen, started his career well with four starts and four wins and one being a shutout. The following years, after trading away the Calder Memorial Trophy winner for two new players, Hossa beat out Kovalchuckís scoring record by scoring one hundred points in one season. The teamís 2009-10 season stats are thirty-five wins, thirty-four losses, and thirteen overtime losses resulting in eighty-three season points.!
