The Virginia Cavaliers football program had their first game in 1888 and has an extensive list of head coaches over the decades up to today. They are currently part of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division, and compete in the NCAA Division I-FBS. The school athletic program boasts four major rivalries since its inception including North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Maryland, and Florida State Seminoles. The Seminole rivalry isn’t considered a big one, but they do compete for the Jefferson-Eppes Trophy specifically for games between two. Their original football team wore no pads or helmets, and was part of a club style association known simply as “Foot Ball Association.” The school’s first true football field was started in 1901 and subsequently caused an investigation in 1904 and then a strict athletic code was drafted in 1906. The investigation was to root out and prevent professional athletes from joining the campus for the sole purpose of money. For the first fifteen years on the new field, the head coach of the athletics department changed almost every year for two thirds of the decade and a half. With ten new coaches in the fifteen years, also came ten winning seasons for the team. They have since endured the World War, and continue to be one of the oldest school football teams to date.!
