Arguably one of the most storied programs in college football history, the Buckeyes of Ohio State University have taken to the football since the 19th century. The Buckeyes come from humble beginnings, being created at the request of a student in 1890. Skip ahead 32 years and you’ll find this once infantile program is selling tickets to record crowds, eventually leading the school to build Ohio Stadium, better known today as “The Horseshoe”, which was funded entirely on fan donations. To this day, the Buckeyes boast a remarkable .750 winning percentage when playing at their home stadium. The Ohio State University also performs what is known nationwide as one of the most recognizable and best college football traditions that exist. Before the start of each Ohio State game at Ohio Stadium, The Ohio State Marching Band, sometimes referred to as “The Best Damn Band In the Land”, takes the field to perform the famous Script Ohio. In a continuous flow of motion, the band breaks out of a simple block formation to write Ohio in cursive across the face of the field. Once the letters have been created, a senior sousaphone player is chosen to dot the “i” in Ohio. This tribute has been done since the 1930’s and is considered to be one of the most prestigious honors that anyone associated with The Ohio State University could receive. Some “i” dotters in the past include former Buckeye head coach Woody Hayes and professional golfer and alumni Jack Nicklaus. All 102,000 fans at Ohio Stadium go crazy for this tradition. From one fan of football to another, the gameday experience in Columbus, Ohio is like none other.
