Middle Tennessee University sustains fifteen varsity sports known as the Blue Raiders. The Blue Raiders participate in the NCAA Division I-FBS Sun Belt Conference in many of their sports. Teams at the school include baseball, cross country, basketball, golf, football, track, tennis, softball, soccer, and volleyball. They also fund rugby, ice hockey, and inline hockey club sports which are not part of the NCAA. They currently have active rivalries with the Troy Trojans and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The Blue Raider name dates back to a newspaper contest in 1934 in which a student won five dollars from although he later confessed he took the name of another college’s sports program, the Red Raiders. The football team’s first season was in 1911, and they maintain a .580 win percentage composed of five hundred wins, three hundred and fifty-eight losses, and twenty-eight ties. In postseason bowl games, the team has a record of two wins out of four games, and they play their home games out of Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium. Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium can seat up to thirty-one thousand spectators and was completed in 1933. Their current head coach, Rick Stockstill, just completed his fifth year at the college with a cumulative record of twenty-seven wins and twenty-three losses for a .540 win percentage.
