The University of Iowaís athletics program, the Hawkeyes, began its first football season in 1889. Their current head coach is Kirk Ferentz and is entering his twelfth year in that capacity. The teamís record under his watch is eighty-one wins and fifty-five losses for a win percentage of .596. The team plays their home games inside Kinnick Stadium which comfortably seats up to almost seventy-one thousand fans in Iowa City, Iowa. Initially, the team was independent for two years around 1890, then again in 1897-1899. They were part of the Western Interstate University Football Association until they moved to the Missouri Valley Conference in 1907 and then became part of the Big Ten Conference less than a year later. The teamís all-time record is five hundred and eighty wins, five hundred and twelve losses, and thirty-nine ties for a compiled win percentage of .530. They have twenty-four bowl games resulting in thirteen wins and one tie. Finally, the Hawkeyes hold one national title, and eleven conference titles. Aside from the teamís success, the students have also shown well as one pushed out as a Heisman Trophy winner and twenty others were voted Consensus All-Americans. Nile Kinnick, the player the stadium was named after, won the schoolís only Heisman Trophy in 1939, and Cal Jones was the first black athlete for Iowa to win the Outland Trophy.
