California’s Fresno based university, California State University, fields the Fresno State Bulldogs on nineteen different varsity fields and courts. They have eight men’s sports and eleven women’s sports, and their Western Athletic Conference Football team plays in the Bulldog Stadium for their home games. The stadium can hold up to forty-one thousand spectators built in 1980 for the then fifty-nine year old program, established in 1921. The Bulldog’s all-time record is five hundred and forty-six wins, three hundred and sixty-nine losses, and twenty-eight ties for a win percentage of .594 spanning five conferences. They started in 1922 in the California Coast Conference, moved to the Northern California Athletic Conference in 1925, then the California Collegiate Athletic Association twice between 1939 and 1968 with a three year break following 1950. Until 1991, they were members of the Big West Conference in 1991 when they began the two year transition to the Western Athletic Conference. Their current head coach is Pat Hill entering his fourteenth year at the school. He currently has a strong one hundred wins and sixty-six losses for a win percentage during his tenure at .602. His record is only beaten by a handful of previous coaches, Leo F. “Deed” Harris, Jimmy Bradshaw, Clark Van Galden, Cecil Coleman with the school’s best record, and Jim Sweeney just prior to his 1997 appointment.
