The
Seminoles of Florida State University are
considered a top tier
program when it comes to college football. Their
dominance in the sport late in
the 20th century earned them the title of “The
team of the 90’s”. From 1987 until
2000, the Seminoles were ranked among the top 5
teams in the nation according
to the Associated Press, totaling up to an
unprecedented 14 straight seasons.
During this time span, FSU took home 9 straight
conference titles in the ACC as
well as 2 national championships, one of which
was the inaugural BCS
Championship.
The man who built Florida State football into
what it is today stepped into
the head coaching position in 1976. Bobby Bowden
would see this as his only
losing season while coaching at FSU until the
end of the 2009 season. Bowden
has led the Seminoles to 28 straight post-season
appearances, which is the
longest active streak. His legend will live on
at Florida State and throughout the
college football world, having had the Seminoles
home field named after him. He
is only one of two coaches to have been inducted
into the College Football Hall of
Fame while still actively coaching. This didn’t
happen without it being earned
though; Bowden is the second winningest coach of
all time for any FBS school.
