Compiled in
1906, when state regulation abolished all
previous Florida public colleges and pooled them
into the University of Florida, the Florida
Gators are one of the more competitive teams in
their division. The are part of the NCAA
Division I-FBS of the Southeastern Conference’s
Eastern Division. They have produced thirty
Consensus All-Americans, three Heisman Trophy
winners, eight Conference Titles, and three
National Titles. The Florida Gator all-time
record is six hundred and fifty-four wins, three
hundred and seventy-four losses, and forty ties
for a combined win ratio of .631. Their current
head coach, Urban Meyer, just finished his fifth
year with the team and has a tenure record of
fifty-seven wins and ten losses for a .851 win
ratio. They have several rivalries ranging from
the instate Florida State Seminoles, and
University of Miami, to Tennessee, with
Louisiana State University and Georgia Bulldogs
in between. They have additional rivalries with
the Auburn Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide. The
school awards the Fergie Ferguson Award each
year to the senior football player that displays
the most “leadership, character, and courage.”
This is in homage to the late Forrest K.
Ferguson that was a former UF athlete until he
landed in Normandy on D-Day leading his platoon
as second lieutenant. Upon receiving serious
injuries during the assault, he was hospitalized
and eventually died of his injuries ten years
later.! |
