Clemson, South Carolina is called home to the Tigers of Clemson University. The tigers are part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and more specifically the Atlantic Division. Clemson has gained prestige for its competitiveness throughout all their athletic programs, but football seems to have gained more of a following than any other. The Tigers football team plays their games in Memorial Stadium, which has taken the nickname of “Death Valley” to the delight of their fans. The reason for the famous moniker isn’t exactly clear, but there are a few reasons as to how the name stuck. The most popularly accepted reason is simply that their legendary coach Frank Howard used the name after hearing a rival coach use the term in the 50’s. The name has stuck with the stadium ever since. Perhaps the most synonymous symbol of Tiger Football is Howard’s Rock and “the most exciting

25 seconds in college football”. Before every home game, the Tigers football team load onto a couple of buses and head to the West endzone where they await entrance to their roaring stadium. They ceremoniously touch the legendary Howard’s Rock, a large piece of stone straight from the original Death Valley, California that was given to Coach Frank Howard by a student, to prepare for battle on the gridiron. After rubbing Howard’s Rock, the Clemson Tigers run down the hill behind the endzone and take the field. At their home field, the Clemson Tigers enjoy a glorious run of success, rarely losing a game in Death Valley. With the help of their loyal fans that show up in swarms, Clemson’s home turf is notorious for being one of the hardest stadiums for an opponent to play in. Being such, Clemson is also famous for being one of the most entertaining experiences on a Saturday.
