Tool, described by multiple magazines as a metal goliath of sorts, is comprised of big names Maynard James Keenan, Justin Chancellor, Adam Jones, and Danny Carey. Winners of three Grammy Awards and producing multiple
worldwide albums all being successful, Tool shows why it is considered a cornerstone of the metal genre. They do deviate from the traditional formula extensively causing their exact definition to waver between
alternative metal, rock, and progressive metal or rock, even as far as art rock. The members are extremely private, and even go so far as to protect the sound of their music by not releasing lyrics with the albums.
Their first album, the 1993 Undertow set their place in music with a heavy metal sound and then the release of Ænima in 1996 further illustrated their intentions.
Tool seeks to unify visual arts and music into one
entity sending a message of personal evolution stressed most in Lateralus in on their 2001 album. Their success spread worldwide with 10,000 Days in 2006 when critical acclaim came from every possible source from
critics and listeners. The band is always weary of the music industry as their releases tend to be long and complex, and are often edited and censored for mass media distribution. This results in sometimes drastically
shortened music videos or cryptic lyrics that dilute the message of the work. In March 2010, it was announced that the members of Tool have begun committed to writing their next album and continue to set tour dates
across the United States and Canada.
