Marshall Mathers, who is probably better known by his stage name of Eminem nowadays, blew up in the hip-hop scene in 1999. His first hit album, The Slim Shady LP, was welcomed with open arms throughout the hip-hop community, going 3 times platinum by the end of 1999. What really brought him to the top of the music world was his second hit album, The Marshall Mathers LP. Within one week of the album’s release, almost 2 million copies had been sold in the U.S. “Stan”, the album’s 3rd single, is highly regarded as one of the best rap songs of all time, even breaking into Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the top 500 songs of all time. This album also gave Eminem the title for fastest selling solo artist of all time. To date, the album has sold nearly 10 million albums in the United States alone.

Eminem’s success continued with the creation of his next studio album, The Eminem Show, in the summer of 2002. Once again, Eminem’s album would reach the top of the Billboard top 200 within a week, selling over 1 million copies in that span. A great deal of controversy always seems to be surrounding Eminem and the content of his songs. Commercial success continued with his next two albums, Encore and Relapse, including a Grammy for best rap album for the latter. His latest album, Recovery, was released in June 2010.

A lot of controversy surrounds Eminem and his song content, including references to various people in his life. His relationships with his mother, his daughter, and his ex wife are frequently brought into his lyrics, obviously being strong influences in how he expresses himself through rap. What really seems to strike a cord with some people is how he refers to various celebrities in his songs, often to their displeasure. However, he’s made a point on several different occasions that his lyrics shouldn’t be taken literally all the time. His level of fan support has grown immensely worldwide. In fact, he is often considered the most successful solo artist for the 21st century thus far.

With over 80 million albums sold worldwide, Eminem has quickly become one of the most popular and celebrated artists of all time, racking up a total of 13 number one singles, 9 number one albums, and 11 Grammy Awards over the course of his 10 year popular career. He currently has a few shows planned with fellow legendary rapper, Jay-Z, in Detroit, New York City, and Fontana, California. With the recent release of Recovery, he is expected to have a promotional tour for the album. Ask anyone who has had the chance to see Eminem perform live and they will all tell you he puts on an amazing show.
