Shear
Madness is a comedy show which is recorded in the Guinness
Book for the first, second, and third longest running play
in the history of American theatre. The show invites locals
and guests to come watch the show as armchair detectives to
help solve the mystery. The mystery of a scissor stabbing
murder of famed concert pianist who lives above the Shear
Madness hairstyling salon. The show is a combination of
improvisational humor and a mixture of audience interaction
to solve the case in this unique show performance each
night.
This show currently has three different performances in
three different places including Las Vegas, Boston, and
Washington DC. Internationally the show is shown in Spain,
Greece, Poland, and Seoul, Korea. The show is known as an
international phenomenon with productions in more than 37 US
cities and 36 international productions. The show has also
been translated into 11 different foreign languages. In
total the show has been seen by more than 8.5 million
people.
The production began in the summer of 1976 in Upstate New
York. It was directed by Bruce Jordan who was a former high
school teacher. Marilyn Abrams, who was also a former school
teacher, was acting in the play. Abrams and Jordan became
good friends and even after the play ended their friendship
did not. When the first year of Shear Madness came around
Jordan had to do a lot of work to it. He wanted the audience
to be able to interact as much as possible with solving the
case. Soon the play turned into a show that was different
every time it was performed. A little bit later it occurred
to Jordan that the play would do well as a comedy. Soon
after that the play was a big hit in the three major cities,
Boston, Las Vegas, and Washington DC. This is a show that
you do not want to miss when vacationing in Las Vegas. It is
a humorous play for the whole family.
