The Showgirl Must Go OnOpened in 1987, the Painted Desert Golf Course was designed by Jay Moorish, whose creative career has been involved with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf and Desmond Muirhead. This par 72 6840 yard course was created when irrigation was realized to be the lacking ingredient in a great desert course. It was in the beginning that this venue was built helping the industry to realize that growth and development could be done anywhere you could get water to. Located about 10 miles north of Las Vegas, this wasn't the usual cookie cut course, but a venerable opponent that demanded the strictest of actions from the better than average hacker. With overgrown vegetation, the course has lost some of its earliest intimidation and plays better than some of the wilder outcrops of golf courses over the last 2 decades.

The fairways are tight, but not too long, which are appreciated by women golfers and brings them here more often. With gentle slopes and mounding, the first few holes get you into the swing of it. The par 5 number 3 gets you motivated to hit the ball with more directness and as the slopes get bigger, the player realizes that this is a good playing course, as long as you pay attention and give it your best shot. The par 3 number 4 is only 166 yards, but goes downhill with a lake on the front and two bunkers resting next to the green on both sides. Adding 2 trees to the area makes the green seem even smaller than usual. The par 3 number 8 is 173 yards, but there is a lovely pond to get over and although the green is larger than most on the course, it contains a double dip that adds that flavor of excitement on the green. With the number of water fowl, wetlands and water, you lose sight that you are playing golf on a course in Nevada. The final hole of the first nine is a par 4 395 yard play with the left side of the fairway dropping off and bunkers all around the green forcing you to pay attention to your shot. Winding through the homes in the area, the back nine continue the play as it toughens up to the 18th. The number 15 par 5, but with no visible hazards, a good par 5 sweeping a bit to the right from the tee. The 14th par 4 is a short 300 yards, but with lakes intertwined through the fairway, you must get your shot to the green or get into trouble. The par 5 17th hole is a sweeper to the right with bunkers all through the fairway to make it more difficult, especially as it doglegs. The 18th is a jewel par 4 and 388 yards with bunkers guarding the green. A good course that helps develop your precision with the clubs you have and improves confidence and skills.

The clubhouse is a great gathering hole after the course with a circular bar and vaulted ceilings giving you great scenes of the course. In the cooler weather the fireplace helps keep the chill off and adds that special feeling to a great round of golf. A putting and chipping green is available, with a driving range and bunker practice area. A pro shop and PGA pro is on hand to help with tips, advise, or lessons.
