The Showgirl Must Go OnThe three 9 hole courses at the Badlands Golf Club are set up to be quite the challenge and by the looks of the terrain, justified. Located north of Las Vegas, in the Red Rock Canyons, the Johnny Miller designed course includes every facet of the Nevada landscape. With natural washouts, canyons and downreaching arroyos, the Outlaw, Diablo and Desparado, as these nines are so aptly named, will test the accuracy and proficiency of golfers. Inspired by Miller's love for the desert and his need to incorporate the natural beauty available he has done a great job. Chi Chi Rodriquez helped with the design and made sure that a variety of tee boxes were also incorporated into the design. With expansive greens, traps are located throughout the course to encourage accurate shots. With the usual hazards of dry earth, rocks, arroyos, desert shrubs and winds, this course can be fun and challenging depending on the course played. A special note should be made that this is the only club that uses the Coolwell system of heat and air conditioning on their carts. Created in 1995, this unusual course has intergrated the best of the hardships of the land into the added greenery of the course and the results are spectacular. In the original plans, only 18 holes were included, but then 3 years later, the Outlaw was added.

The Outlaw seems to be the easiest, while easy it isn't, just that the green is more prevalent and the desert landscape less evident. The Desparado is said to need to most attention in terms of shots, although the other two use elevation and bunkers to increase the excitement of the game. In all three courses, there is a distinct line between nature and the added green fairways that lead up to good sized putting greens with traps all around, making sure that you are to hit the mark. A mishap could become detrimental and cause your game to suffer. The par 3 8th on Desparado makes a good example on its 169 yards of play, with a big area to the left, rock walls in the front and washout in back. The ninth is even more treacherous with a par 5, 541 yards with a thirty foot deep arroyo stretching 90 feet across, so if your shot isn't on the green, then you have definitely lost a shot. This is the way it is with desert golf and it makes the challenge even more exciting. With 5 or 6 tee distances to help or increase the length of each hole, this magnificent course can be somewhat difficult when the winds start up, since there are no natural barriers and just wide open spaces.

To assist the novice or just to increase skill level, the Ken Venturi Golf Academy is located here where it has been named one of the ten top best courses in Nevada, by Golf Digest. Measuring only 6800 yards, this par 72 course is smaller than most in the area, so the addition of hazards and traps has increased to give the course a great game. Driver use is also limited because of the many hazards like bunkers, traps, arroyos and desert. With this great natural beauty all around, a driving range, cart and club rentals, this course will continue to give golfers a wonderful game of desert golf.
