Orlando's Closest Beach

Orlando may not have the pleasure of being beach side but there is a place not to far away where the urge for a seaside adventure can be fulfilled. This little slice of heaven is called Cocoa Beach. Only 45 minutes from most of the Orlando attractions, Cocoa Beach is Orlando's closest beach. With so much to do no wonder why over 4 million people visit this beach every year! One of the biggest attractions in the Cocoa Beach area is Cape Canaveral. This is the location where many great men test the technology that has changed our future forever. If you time your vacation right you can see an actual space shuttle launch into outer space. Here you can also visit the Kennedy Space Center and explore the large museum full of artifacts and delicate gear the was used on previous space missions. Beyond the space center there is plenty of other activities to keep you busy. Take a half day trip to the Brevard County zoo and get in touch with your wide side. If exploring untouched natural habitats is your cup of tea then you will have a blast in the great estuary of the Indian River. Here you will find several wild life sanctuary that cradles the life that lives below and above the surface. All day excursions can be done on your own or you can hire a guide. Another reason why so many people come to Cocoa Beach is Port Canaveral. This is the departure and arrival point for many large luxury cruise liners. From here you can go on a 3 day cruise to the Bahamas or a 14 day cruise to Europe or South America. Port Canaveral is also an important trade hub for goods that come from all over the world. Even if we look passed the superior transportation network that Cocoa Beach has, there is one attraction that should not be missed and that is the beach! There are many resorts on the beach that offer many activities like para sailing and surfing. Another good reason to stay a couple of night in Cocoa Beach is the affordability of the area. Cocoa Beach offers some very good rates for hotels at all times of the year. On the beach you will find may nice places to hang out and relax. Ron Jon's Surf Shop is a surfing Mecca that is just seconds from the beach. Over 2 million people visit this store annually to buy or just to dream about the best products on the market. Several bars and night clubs are around the area like coconuts on the beach. This place is right on the beach and host some great shindigs! So when traveling to Orlando keep in mind there is more out there than just theme parks and the greatest adventures are extremely close. Whether you its a day trip or your planning a vacation to Cocoa Beach, remember this phrase: Don't worry, be happy! and visit Florida often.

My First Trip to Universal's Islands of Adverture

A few weeks ago I went to Universal's Islands of Adventure for the first time with my cousins. The first ride that we went on was the HULK. Going on it I was both excited and scared! When I sat down I was still having second thoughts about riding, but I decided to stay on. When the ride starts you explode in to a high speed thrill through high drops and loops. You also get your picture taken but don't know where they take it, they catch you off guard. After the ride I was so glad that I stayed on, it was so much fun! Later that day we rode it again... well three more times!

After the excitement of that coaster we decided to ride something a little less extreme. We rode Dudley Do-Rights Rip Saw Falls. We knew that this was a water ride but we didn't think that we would get that wet because the people coming off before us weren't soaked. Once it was our turn at riding we were all fighting about we wanted to sit in the back... No one wanted to get wet! The log you sit in sat 5 people and we were only 4 so it ended up with no one sitting in the front. But the person who sat in the second seat was really wet at the end of the ride because you go down the fall you don't get wet... It is when you think you are done and you turn a corner and there are water guns that people put money into soak you!

Because we were already wet we decided to go on The Jurassic Park River Adventure. On this ride you get to take a river ride and see dinosaurs in their natural habitats. But then something goes wrong and you end up going pummeling down a hill into the river... To our surprise you don't get that wet.

After we decided to head towards the Dueling Dragons. This is a ride where two coasters, fire and ice, go off at the same time and you race through the tracks. At one point during the ride you think you are going to collide head first with the other coaster. When you sit in the front you see this other coaster coming full speed at you but just as you think your going crash you turn in to a loop. It is such a rush! We also rode this ride more than once.

Wanting to continue our coaster adventure we decided to go on The Flying Unicorn. Much to our surprise it wasn't a rush, it was more of a first time coaster ride.

Then we went on into the wonderful land of Seuss Landing. This is good for the younger children too. There is a tour of Seuss Landing, while you are on it you get to listen to a Dr. Seuss classic. Then there is the One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish ride when you listen to a recording and follow the directions. Then there is The Cat in the Hat, when you get to listen to the story of The Cat in the Hat while spinning through the book. You can also take a ride on your favorite Seuss character on the Caro-Seuss-el.

Later in the day we realized that we had missed out on the Spider-Man ride. It is a 3D experience when you are attacked by all of Spider-Man's enemies and in the end he saves you. We then went on Dr. Doom's Fear Fall on this ride you are sitting outside and it shoots you 150 ft. into the air and drops you!

The last ride that we went on was Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges. I do not recommend riding this ride unless you are prepared to be SOAKED!!! We are so glad that we chose this to be our last ride because we were completely soaked. Within the first 10 seconds of the ride I was done! It is a lot of fun, especially if it is a hot day.

What will we do?

As spring comes to a close and summer fires up, something else is going up too. Gas prices! This is a massive problem to everyone. Even those who have fuel efficient cars or hybrids still feel the effect of the rising gas prices. The spike is due to a large shortage of refineries. several refineries in the mid-west have closed down due to complications. This is creating extreme shortages on our domestic supply of gasoline. The price of oil per barrel has not raised enough to change the price we see at the pumps. So why the major increase? More people over seas are driving now so this means less oil on the market for the rest of the world. This is a sign that we are heading towards a dark future. We need answers and we need them fast. Some people say that the fuel crisis is our grand children's problem. but at the rate we are going its our problem and we need a solution now. Is this the end of the world as we know it? Hybrids are a start but we need to be completely oil free. There are many quick fixes but we need to think more about our future. The gas prices effect everyone, even those that do not drive there own vehicle. High gas prices effects shipping there for rises the price of the products that need to be shipped. It also effect a lot of local economies like tourism. Orlando for instance derives a large portion of its income from tourism. So high gas prices mean less people on the road traveling to places like orlando. This should not deture people from going on vacation, they should put a little more money aside for the high gas prices. One thing everyone should do is practice gas saving techniques. some of those include: accelerate slowly, try not to stop suddenly for this will decreses gas mileage. So when planning a disney vacation remember to put extra money a side for unexpected gas hikes.
